Leaking Steering Box

Post by BobRay »

[I'm posting this for Jim Curtis, who posted it in the old forum - Bob Ray]]

99 Ford steering box is the subject. My Bounder steering box is leaking badly. Has anyone had this problem and how did the rectify it. Not sure where it is leaking and cannot get to it until spring here in Ontario (chilly). On a 2000 mile trip this fall it used a 1/2 gallon of fluid and there was 4 containers of the real thick fluid. The thick fluid did slow it down but not stopping the leak. Any help would be great.

Hi. Jim Curtis here to update on steering box leak. I removed the steering box and discovered the seal on the top where the steering wheel shaft exits the box. The seal was replaced by a mechanic friend who helped re-install the box. NOT AN EASY JOB. It weighs 40lbs. The front tire was removed, and still not easy. You need some mechanic savvy to tackle this by yourself. Jim Curtis 99 34J VW Wagon on dolly.
